I've had a few people ask me about renewing their vows recently, so I thought I'd answer some of the more frequently asked questions...
Why would we renew our vows?
To reflect on your relationship to date... to reconnect with your original 'why'... to be conscious about your marriage... to connect with why now (at this point in your lives)... to re-vision your relationship into the future... to do it your way, this time around... because it's a beautiful way to celebrate an anniversary... to create a memorable occasion to look back on...
There are so many good reasons to renew your vows!
What would your intention be for renewing your vows?
What might be included in a vow renewal ceremony?
Whatever you want!
Obviously there are no legals this time around, but I'd wholeheartedly recommend vows... maybe the vows you originally made to one another on your wedding day... maybe words to say what your relationship and your love means to you now... and new vows or promises you want to make to each other from now.
We can include rituals which echo those in your original ceremony... bring in Scottish rituals... or rituals to honour your heritage... or create new rituals just for you.
We can include poems and music which speak of your love for one another.
You can sing... dance... meditate... contemplate... play music... Really! Whatever you want!
What would you want to include?
When is a good time for a vow renewal ceremony?
Your wedding anniversary... whilst on a trip to Scotland... a birthday... after a significant life event or challenge in your lives or your relationship.
When would feel right for you?
Where might we hold our ceremony?
Anywhere in nature (within reason)... the Isle of Skye has lochs, mountains, beaches and castles - take your pick! When you're booking your accommodation, you might want to consider whether it will make a good back-up location, in case of bad weather.
Where would feel magical to you?
What time of day is good for a ceremony?
It depends where, what time of year and what else you have planned for your day. Book a local photographer, as they're the best ones to advise on he best time, they'll know... when the light will be best... how busy your location might be... how to get the best photographs.
When you book me, I will usually block out the whole day so we can decide the exact time closer to the date, often at short notice, based on the ever-changing weather forecast and assuming your guests and other suppliers are flexible. You might want to aim for sunrise... or sunset... or even a specific and meaningful time such as 11.11... but I'd always advise, even then, to stay flexible.
When would be your dream ceremony time?
Do people usually have guests?
Sometimes... sometimes not... it really is up to you! There's no need for witnesses obviously, although you may decide that being witnessed by those you love is important to you.
Who would you want there?
Can we include our children in some way?
Absolutely! Together we can find creative ways to weave your children into your ceremony, for example inviting them to read poems or speak words to you; or you might want to make promises to them, or include a family blessing of some kind.
How might you like to include your children?
What if we don't know where to start?
Great! That's the perfect place to begin. I can lead you through the whole process to co-create a beautiful, meaningful, personal ceremony to honour you both and your marriage.
I can link you in with local photographers, florists, cake bakers, handfasting cord braiders, quaich turners, ring makers, etc... Most of the wedding suppliers here on the island are friends (as well as being the best at what they do!) and it's always a delight to be able to refer them.
If you're planning to renew your vows on the Isle of Skye and I'm available on the date you want, I can offer you a free no obligation exploratory zoom call... to connect and explore how we might create something magical together.
Do you have a date in mind? When shall we meet?
